Each person who takes to the Megaphone will be rewarded with a Good Life Experience Megaphone patch, which are in the works as we speak. The answer is they have an extremely long life, spanning for hundreds of years. This week we welcome adventurers Amy (12) and Ella (10) Meek to the Megaphone to talk about their Clear Plastic UK Campaign. As a family who love and thrive in the outdoors, seeing plastic bottles, straws, cups and tops littering beaches and natural landscapes really gets on our nerves, to say the least. In fact, almost every piece of plastic ever made still exists today.
A large proportion of the rest of the plastic that is produced ends up in landfill sites where it stays for thousands of years, breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces but never biodegrading. When rain falls on the landfill, it mixes with the toxins from the plastic creating a harmful leachate, which can have devastating effects on wildlife if it reaches ponds and rivers.
Some plastic ends up floating in our rivers and eventually the seas and oceans. Plastic blocks their digestive system and makes them feel full when they are actually slowly starving to death.
Marine plastic is broken down by the sunlight and is mistaken for food by birds and fish. The toxins also travel up the food chain; smaller fish, with plastic in their stomachs, get eaten by larger fish and larger fish get eaten by humans. And so, instead of walking on and turning a blind eye to the rubbish that is engulfing our planet, we decided to do something about it.
